of typical Gothic Church:
Church Characteristics:
1.Plans:
§Generally in the form of a Latin
cross of which the short arms form the north and south transepts.
§Formed from the Early Christian
basilican churches such as Saint Peter, Rome by the extension of bema into
well- marked transepts; or may be from the cruciform tombs of of the period of
Constantine.
2.Main Body:
•Generally stretches westward and the
choir & sanctuary eastward from the crossing of nave and transepts which is
often marked by a tapering tower in England.
3.Columns& Piers:
•These
main divisions east & west, and the transepts north & south, are often
divided into central nave with side aisles, separated by columns & piers.
•These columns and piers support the
nave arcades and the walls which rise above the aisle roofs.
4.Principal Entrance:
•Generally
at west in France and flanked by towers.
•On
south or north side as in England and is protected by porch.
5.Triform:
•Triform or blind- story is the space beneath the sloping roof over the
aisle vault and enclosed on the nave side by a series of arches.
6.Clear- story:
•Above the triform is a range of windows to light the
nave called clear- story.
7.Choir:
•The eastern arm or the choir is the most ornate part of the church.
